Seeing the Future through Rose Coloured Glasses by Dr Aleea Devitt

How does the way we think about the future change as we get older?

We spend much of the present planning and preparing for upcoming events. By some estimates, we think about the future every 16 minutes. But as we get older, the way that we think about the future changes.

In this seminar Dr Devitt will discuss the upsides and the downsides of changes in future thinking with age. Why do we produce less relevant and more irrelevant information when imagining future events as we get older? Do younger and older adults use different brain regions when thinking about the future? Why do we become more optimistic about the future with age?

Dr Devitt will present three lines of research that use both behavioural methods and brain imaging to address these questions and provide insight into age-related changes in future thinking.

About Dr Aleea Devitt

Aleea Devitt is a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Waikato. She completed her graduate degree at the University of Auckland, and a postdoctoral position at Harvard University. She is interested in how we think about the past and the future, and how this changes as we age.
