This is the concert you have been waiting for: Two queer choirs, one concert, in Wellington.
This Labour weekend, the Glamaphones will be hosting our older sibling choir from Auckland, the brilliant GALS, for a joint concert.
This programme, with offerings from each choir, was created in the midst of a global pandemic. Each and every song will be sung together by both choirs. The diversity of the programme will, as always, reflect the diversity within each choir, including elements of pop, traditional choral, and comedic music. The common thread across the programme is the theme of solidarity: we are stronger together.
This concert has been a long time in the making. Conceived before the COVID hit, the Glamaphones and GALS cooked up a plan to join forces. While the two choirs have collaborated in the past at various queer choral festivals, this is the first time that the Glamaphones and GALS will sing together, shoulder to shoulder.
This is the first time that Rachel Hyde, long-time Glamaphones Musical Director, has worked with GALS conductor Nick Forbes. Both are talented musicians with many a collaboration under their respective belts, but given the circumstances, this joining of choirs is a unique opportunity to create beautiful music in a time of challenge and uncertainty.
This matinee concert will be presented at 4pm at St Andrew’s on the Terrace, the Glamaphones’ home base, and will be followed by our famous hospitality, with supper and refreshments. Come along to meet our GALS pals!
We are quite aware of the possibility that this concert could be cancelled or postponed, depending on the public health measures that may need to be in place at the time. It is our hope that this concert will be able to proceed as planned but in the event that it cannot, we will certainly offer a refund.
