The Glamaphones: Singing Workshop with Mark Dorrell
A workshop led by the incomparable Mark Dorrell. Look forward to singing and learning alongside Wellington’s own queer choir. The songs of the day will be a vehicle for Mark to pass on some of his considerable wisdom for successful choral singing. The day will also be punctuated with breaks to allow our community of queer singers (and friends) to socialise and stay refreshed. The day will be accompanied on the piano by Tas Richards, and will offer the opportunity to meet our musical director, Rachel Hyde.
We have selected two fabulous stage show numbers for the day: Raise You Up / Just Be from Kinky Boots, and Being Alive from Sondheim’s Company. These are big numbers that close their respective shows - both are uplifting and perfectly suited to Wellington’s Pride Festival.

Being Alive is the penultimate musical number in Company. When it opened in 1970, it was commended for its unconventional wrestling with unpleasant topics, especially as stage musicals were then expected to always leave audiences light and smiley. The Glamaphones met Mark when he took us for a rehearsal in 2019 leading up to our performance of Bernstein classics. Mark shared his viral enthusiasm and his experience in the West End in London, really elevating our rendition of West Side Story. We knew after that session that we had to have him back for more!
The Glamaphones is Wellington’s queer choir. All-comers are welcome to join and we do not audition. We rehearse weekly at St Andrews on the Terrace from 6.30 to 8.30pm, and typically perform two concerts each year. We also participate in a range of community events such as Transgender Day of Remembrance and AIDS memorial day. In addition to our home concerts in Wellington, we have performed in Dublin, Sydney, Auckland and Paekakariki.
