'The Man On the Island' (R13) 78 mins Directed by Simon Mark Brown

Film-maker Simon Mark Brown (The Catch) is clearly entranced with the attitude and isolation of Colin McLaren who lives in a house that has been half-built for 30 years now, on the tiny island of Rakino, in the Hauraki Gulf.
Rakino is home to about 20 full-time residents and maybe 80 dwellings, most of which are unoccupied, most of the time. There is no electricity, sewerage or commerce on the island. Any food you cannot grow or raise yourself must be brought in by boat. Toilets are long-drop, or composting. Power is either solar or by generator. McLaren came to Rakino as a young artist and photographer who wanted to escape the noise of Auckland. He grew olives with friends, established the legendary cafe Rakinos in the city and eventually fell into near reclusiveness. The Man on the Island is a leisurely paced introduction to McLaren and the island of Rakino which is a fascinating and deeply beautiful place. The film recently had its world premiere as part of Sunday’s Doc Edge at the Civic event in Auckland

'Living On The Edge' (E) 28 mins
Presented by the film-maker Robin Kewell who was cameraman and editor on the film.
‘Living on the Edge’ by Three S Films, Penzance. (Winner: Special Jury Award Celtic Film & TV Festival Fort William 1996) an insider’s view of a year in the life of a traveller’s camp. It follows the effort of a small group to build a home in an ancient disused quarry in Cornwall on the very edge of England. The film provides fascinating insights into the lifestyle and aspirations of these self-appointed outcasts. It is a gripping real life-drama played out between the travellers and the rural communities around them, played out in the most bewitching and atmospheric landscape of Cornwall's west coast.
