The Speed of Modern Life: Dunedin’s Victorian Light Night
Sally Shuttleworth

On the night of March 8, 2020 Professor Sally Shuttleworth (Oxford University) will light up the University of Otago’s campus with an award-winning sound and light show, designed to showcase work from her European Research Council-funded project, ‘Diseases of Modern Life’. The projection shows how the Victorians grappled with a world in transition and focuses on the pressures they faced, including the rise of railways, environmental pollution, and the need to retreat. Many of these stressors are, of course, familiar to us today.

In this free public lecture, Professor Shuttleworth will speak about her collaboration with Ross Ashton and Karen Monid of The Projection Studio, and the research into mental and physical health in the nineteenth century, which underpins the show.
