This historic cultural event is the only time the public will see the tribe’s waka tauaa (war canoes) in action on Waikato River.
Exclusive guided tours of Turangawaewae Marae are also offered and are only available during the regatta event.
Turangawaewae Marae is the headquarters for the Maaori King movement (known as the Kiingitanga) and is the official residence and reception centre of the head of the Kīngitanga, Maaori King Tuheitia Te Wherowhero VII.
The regatta is an all-day whaanau (family) festival featuring:
- Waka tauaa parade (two appearances 11am and 3pm)
- Kapa haka (Maaori cultural) performances
- Waka Kopapa (single hull canoe) racing
- Traditional kai (food) stalls
- Craft and education stalls and demonstrations
- Woodchopping
- Musical entertainment
- Amusement rides
Cost: $5 entry fee per person, $2 for under 5’s.
