Meeting the gentle giants in New Zealand waters

Whales are the world’s largest mammals and can be found in every ocean around the globe. Some you may be familiar with, whereas others are so rare and elusive that scientists have never even seen them alive.

A total of 14 different species of whales are found in New Zealand, making our waters one of the best places worldwide to see a variety of these spectacular animals.

In this presentation, Dr Krista Hupman, a Marine Mammal Biologist from NIWA, will explore the diverse range of whales occupying New Zealand waters. She will explain the difference between toothed and baleen whales, and highlight the features for identifying different species. Dr Hupman will also touch on the threat status of each species and talk about ways we can all help with their conservation.
