Yeah Nah Where? Experimental Music Festival

Aotea (Great Barrier Island) is a remote off-grid island on the edge of the Hauraki Gulf. As full-time residents of the island, we at Yeah Nah Where? have to generate our own power, acquire our own water and manage our own waste systems. Freight and personal travel to and from the island is costly, making putting on gigs quite a difficult thing... it definitely takes a team.

This PledgeMe X Boosted campaign will raise funds to cover the hire of a PA system and generator for the event. Additional funds raised will contribute towards artists’ travel expenses.

Any funds raised beyond this will be donated to Protect Aotea, a local charitable trust advocating an Iwi led approach to environmental protection.

All of the artists and organisers are donating their skills and time (and money!) to put this community event on - your donation will be gratefully received, and will help us to host more events in the future.

The Concept
This is a community event. It is being organised for the benefit of the community, who don't often get the chance to see the best noise bands around (including a few locals who will make rare appearances on stage), and for the benefit of the musicians, who don't often get to contend with the kind of constraints or the kind of beauty Aotea offers.

The weekend of Friday January 10th (the night of the main gig) is a full moon, so nature will provide us with night time lighting in the dark sky sanctuary; the associated midday low tide will provide awesome swimming as well as the beach caves that are the venue for the beach cave jam on Saturday January 11.

The beach cave jam is a participatory event. At midday with the help of a low low tide we have access to the beach caves behind the mermaid pool at the south end of Kaitoke beach. For a couple of hours we'll be able to use that sound space for our own auditory pleasure. Participants will bring their acoustic instruments, or pick up a couple of rocks to make tumutumu, and join the Tumutumu Rock Band. Waimarama Knowles will join the fray, and then give us her take on cave sounds.
