Join multisensory artist and researcher, Jo Burzynska on a playful pedestrian exploration of urban space guided not by the eye or down well-trodden paths, but by the non-visual senses. The route of the walk, which starts at The Arts Centre, will be dictated by pursuing spontaneous cues of what can be heard, smelled or touched in its surroundings. The deep sensing techniques that Jo has been developing, will be shared and employed to heighten multisensory experiences. Through this novel approach to urban navigation different connections with place might be made and aspects of the city discovered than would otherwise remain overlooked.

This walk is part of Jo’s current multisensory art project as an Artist-in-Residence at The Arts Centre, which explores the city with the non-visual senses to answer the question: What might we find when we stop looking? It uses a new method of creative enquiry, which Jo calls sensuous psychogeography, which seeks to promote a sensitivity to the geographic environment through a sense-focused urban walking practice. What is discovered on these walks will be incorporated into the multisensory artworks Jo is making during this residency that will be presented at The Arts Centre later this year.

All you need is shoes suitable for walking, a waterproof jacket depending on the weather, and an open mind and senses!

Please note the postponement date is Saturday 29 May 2 – 3.30 pm, but if you don’t hear from us by 10 am on the day, please assume it’s going ahead.

We are grateful for the support of Creative New Zealand and Stout Trust for our Arts Four Creative Residency Programme in 2021.
