Get creative at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki!

This April school holidays, the Gallery is proud to bring you a hands-on School Holiday Programme inspired by art in our current exhibition – Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art.

Designed for children aged 7–12, the full-day sessions will engage tamariki with a wide variety of art practices and themes.

Delivered by our in-house team of artists, the Programme encourages children to explore the Gallery's current exhibition, look at the mahi toi in new ways, learn about the techniques used in making some of the works. Each day is a different creative art-making activity!

WEEK 1 PROGRAMME
Mon 19 Apr 2021: Resin Relief – Create your own relief artwork using resin and moulds inspired by Robert Jahnke's Waitangi Rosary, 2007, currently on display at Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art.

Tue 20 Apr 2021: Soft Sculpture – Inspired by Te Maari's Manu Figures, children will make their own anthropormorphic soft sculptures of an animal or plant they're especially fond of.

Wed 21 Apr 2021: Shadow Puppet Theatre – Learn about storytelling, character development and design. Together, we will make a collection of moveable puppets to perform in our shadow puppet theatre, using Māori legends as inspiration.

Thu 22 Apr 2021: Bling This – Inspired by the sparkly mahi of Reuben Paterson, children will learn how form is seen differently on reflective surfaces and how colour can change the perception of an object.

Fri 23 Apr 2021: Print Making – Learn how to reproduce a design on both paper and fabric. The children will create their own design, practise printing on paper, then onto a tote bag they can use and take home.
