The Aroha String Quartet have been an integral part of the country's musical scene since 2004, and are renowned for their passionate musicality, impressive technique and multicultural innovation. Original members of the Quartet, Haihong Liu (violin) and Zhongxian Jin (viola) were joined by Robert Ibell (cello) in 2009 and Konstanze Artmann (second violin) in 2018. As well as standard string quartet repertoire, they enjoy adding traditional Chinese music and New Zealand works to their programmes, as well as unusual and exotic pieces from many different parts of the world.

The Aroha Quartet frequently combines with other musicians to present works for larger ensembles and for this concert they welcome NZSO clarinettist Rachel Vernon to present two of the greatest clarinet quintets ever written - by Mozart and Brahms. The Mozart is a much-loved and timeless musical masterpiece, the first work ever composed for that combination and the inspiration for many composers to follow, including Brahms. As well as these two wonderful classics, the concert will include a work by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla - "Oblivion" - arranged for clarinet and string quartet.

This concert has been rescheduled from an earlier date, and because of difficulty in securing a suitable hall booking, the concert will be held at Cedarwood, 17 Parata St, Waikanae. Audience restrictions may be in place depending on Covid Levels. Further information will be provided closer to the date.

Programme:

Mozart: Clarinet Quintet in A, K581
Piazzolla: Oblivion
Brahms: Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Opus 115
