'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' (M) Gets 5 star ratings on all sites
France, 1770. Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day, to paint her secretly.
'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' is a French romance/historical drama from the capable hands of Céline Sciamma, who crafts this meticulous, tantalizing tale of an artist who falls in love with the woman she is assigned to paint. Unlike the typical romance, the film takes a more gradual approach to building a dynamic between each of the characters, which ultimately makes the events that follow all the more meaningful.
Review: It's like a beautiful portrait, piece of art. Each frame is like a piece of art! After very long time I got to see something like this. Visually brilliant. No background score so that the whole attention is on the characters and nothing dramatic. The chemistry between the lead is on another level. Seen nothing like this before. Most beautiful onscreen pair ever! Great artists have left symbols in their great paintings. Celine has done the same. There's symbolism everywhere in this portrait. The plot itself very fresh. But the treatment is simply brilliant. A treat for art lovers, for lovers of good cinema. (Variety 2020)
