A rare performance of the final part of Biber’s sublime masterpiece, played on Baroque instruments by Anne Loeser, violin; Douglas Mews, harpsichord and organ; and Jane Young, cello.
Heinrich Biber’s Rosary Sonatas are the pinnacle of 17th-century violin writing. Composed for use in Christian worship, they commemorate events around Jesus Christ’s life as celebrated in the Catholic Church. Regardless of your religious leanings, they make for an extraordinary spiritual experience.
Undiscovered for 200 years, these sonatas make extensive use of scordatura, the technique of re-tuning the strings of the violin to unusual combinations, even, in one instance, crossing the strings over!
This performance, the final in a cycle of three, features the last 6 sonatas of the set, known as “The Glorious Mysteries”, including the famous Passacaglia in g minor.
