Whether you're into fabrication, geometry, jewellery, fashion, steampunk or repetitive pastimes, there is a chainmail project of the right size and complexity for you - come and explore the fascinating geometry and making of chainmail!

The world of chainmail is much wider than that one weave you see in every fantasy movie. There are hundreds of patterns, all with many variants. Together we will approach this world from different angles to find the one that suits your style.

The workshop starts with making the ring-shaped components out of common fencing wire. Then, we explore together weave after weave, gradually adding a new level of complexity, an element of the terminology, and a tip about fabrication.

You finish the day having produced six starter sheets which you could easily transform into a bracelet, a coaster, a keyring, a necklace, a pouch, or a full shirt (with a little bit more work for the latest!).

Please note that we will be working with butted rings, which are unsuitable for making accurate historical reenactment costumes or safe armour sets. Though we will cover many of the indispensable concepts for such projects, we will not be riveting or welding the rings.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
-use pliers, cutters and mandrels safely and efficiently
-identify, and make, the four types of connections that are the building blocks of every weave
-identify a weave's family, form, structure, and attributes just by looking at it
-conversely, infer from a weave's name its family, form, structure and attributes
-plan complex projects by breaking them down into a sum of its simpler parts

Materials: Pliers, cutters, mandrels and wire will be provided - thinner wire will be provided for the more delicate wrists.

Feel free to bring your favourite pliers, fancy copper or aluminium wire (>1mm diameter) or colourful beads for extra effect.

Note: Courses need a minimum number to go ahead so if we don't have enough enrolments a few days before the start date, we have to cancel. We'll let you know by email so please check yours regularly. If you need to cancel your registration, here are our terms and conditions: "What You Need to Know".

Prerequisites:
Basic hand-eye coordination and an understanding of the geometric principles of symmetry and patterns are required.

Presented by Achille Segard.
