Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland.

Come and work with fabrics, papers, beads and a variety of textiles to make creative art. This is a course for beginners and improvers alike, led by an internationally experienced artist and author. You will leave with your very own book of samples and ideas to pursue your obsession - – you may even have created a wallhanging! Dip into a selection of media, experiment, then produce an artwork using your new textile and mixed media skills. Work with fabrics and papers, in stitch and in beads to make creative art. You will learn to view almost anything as a creative tool, including a sewing machine, hammers, candles and more!

What to bring: Just your lunch each day. We'll provide tea and coffee. All materials are included within your course fee.

Expected learning outcomes
-Learn the properties of some fabrics and papers and how to combine them to create innovative surfaces
-Understand how to combine unusual materials in a textile context
-Be able to use free motion sewing machine techniques for your artworks
-Be able to use beading and stitching techniques

Who should attend? Anyone with an enthusiasm for textile and mixed media arts, from beginner to experienced.

About tutor Alysn. I am an internationally acknowledged artist, curator, tutor and author who loves to share my experimental and improvisational approaches. I specialise in a range of unusual materials such as metals, paper, wire and paint, and not for nothing is my blog called ‘Alysnsburntofferings’ as my techniques include burning, hammering, patinating and distressing (amongst others). Stitching and embellishing are not forgotten and are used freely and expressively. Designs and inspiration are often drawn from natural patterns and textures in addition to a fascination with the history and context of materials and techniques.

Our mission is to provide quality affordable and accessible lifelong learning opportunities for our community.
