Chirality is a term used in physics to refer to handedness. It is when certain systems or structures, although similar, actually wind or spin differently. Handedness has been explored at various moments throughout the history of painting, notable examples being the experiments of automatism by the Surrealists and the gestural legacy of Expressionism.

It is the concept and perception of chirality that has informed the making of the expanded paintings in Claudia Avril’s Lefty Loosey Righty Tighty.

An abstract artist, Claudia is interested in ontological expressions that reflect the human realities of virtuality and the spatial. Her paintings are like wall sculptures, hybrids folding together perception and affect, the hand painted and the fabricated.

In Lefty Loosey Righty Tighty Avril has completed drawings of rhythmic arabesque lines using each hand in turn, composing the ground for her generative creative process. These artworks are hybrids, not only of the left and right hands, but also of the traditional painting and fabricating processes, hence the name of the exhibition “Lefty Loosey Righty Tighty”.

Lefty Loosey Righty Tighty will be opening with an official opening event on Tuesday November 30 at 5pm. Attendance to the opening is free and all are welcome.

This event will proceed in Level 2, with attendees staying 1 metre apart and wearing a mask or face covering. Everyone must scan in, be socially distanced, and please do not attend if you are sick or unwell.
