Are you drawn to the pounding rhythms and sensuous grace of flamenco dance? Now is your chance to learn this passionate art form in a fun environment in classes at 6:00pm every Tuesday (during term time) at Toi Poneke Dance Studio.
Flamenco originated from a melting pot of cultures in southern Spain. It weaves canté (song), guitar, percussion and dance together into a powerful, passionate art form.
Taught by Jessica Garland
Jessica started dancing flamenco at the age of 16 in New Zealand and, at a young age, travelled to Spain to study full-time under leading flamenco artists. On her return, she taught and performed around Aotearoa as part of the Desde Sevilla Flamenco Dance Company. Back in Wellington after 12 years in London, she is keen to help grow and sustain the flamenco community in Pōneke and beyond.
Classes accompanied by guitarists Mark Edwards and Bill Nichol
As a founding member of the Desde Sevilla Flamenco Dance Company, Mark is keen to inspire others to enjoy flamenco. He has studied and performed flamenco guitar for more than 30 years in New Zealand, Australia and Spain. Bill discovered flamenco guitar while studying classical guitar in London and went on to study in Madrid, Seville and Jerez. He still makes frequent trips to Andalucía and is enthusiastic about maintaining contact with flamenco communities in New Zealand and abroad.
The classes are non-profit; all proceeds will go into helping grow the flamenco community in New Zealand.
Term 3 starts Tuesday 27 July – Tuesday 28 September (10 weeks)
We offer two flamenco dance classes every Tuesday evening.
6pm - 6.45pm - Flamenco Foundation
This class is for anyone new to flamenco or for those who would like to focus on the foundational aspects. The class will focus on compás (timing) and technique, while building a short choreography over the term.
6.45pm - 7.40pm - Flamenco Intermediate
For those with flamenco experience and keen to extend and develop. This term will focus on footwork and bodywork technique, while learning a choreography.
You can pay by the class ($10) or it’s cheaper to pay $90 for the term. But please make sure you register on the link below!
All proceeds from class fees go into our fund to support and develop flamenco in Aotearoa.
