In writing her last book, The Baker’s Companion, well-respected food writer Allyson Gofton says she set about writing a baking book for her daughter. The book was to contain all the essential knowledge a young woman would need to know in order to bake successfully. To know how to make substitutions to make bespoke bakes, to be able to convert to gluten-free, to understand the importance of each ingredient and, why you do certain steps in a specific way.
In addition, for Allyson, this third iteration of her original baking book was “ a book of love’. Baking is the wallpaper that covers family life with visual, scented love.
Allyson and her family returned to the village of Caixon, France, for a second year away, but family illness forced an early return to NZ.
Allyson’s demonstration schedule is very curtailed these days. Having moved to Cambridge, Allyson has a busy family schedule with school and sport, as well as creating a wedding-walk garden with her husband Warwick at their property, which she hopes one of her children will use to tie the knot one day! Along with turning a pavlova-coloured house into a Cuban inspired maison!
She joins us for a special night of stories from her second visit to France and will accompany her talk with a demonstration of some French-inspired baking from The Baker’s Companion, and a colourful look back at how kiwi baking has changed.
Refreshments included. Doors open 6.30 pm for a 7.00 pm start. Get in quick - limited spaces!
