In this two-part series, we will look at the politics of freshwater in Aotearoa New Zealand, focusing primarily on Te Wai Pounamu/ The South Island. The first session will attend primarily to Pākehā and bicultural society, focusing on two questions: 1. What is harming our freshwater and groundwater? How did things come to be this bad? 2. How have environmental movements responded? How effective have environmental movements been in protecting freshwater? The second session will focus on Māori freshwater activism through Te Tiriti o Waitangi: 1. What are some of the most important findings of The Waitangi Tribunal regarding freshwater? How have Treaty politics created a new legal context for freshwater in Aotearoa? 2. What is currently occurring here in Te Wai Pounamu around freshwater? How is the work Ngāi Tahu are doing around freshwater impacting new developments in our region?
Dr Anne Scott was a lecturer at the University of Canterbury for many years, her areas of research include sociology and mental health and wellbeing.
