Amokura Glass

We are thrilled and honoured to have the incredible Jan Simpson, from Koru Arts in UK, lead our Full Day Fusing workshop.

This introductory class will allow you to move on to the more advanced fusing courses we will hold in the future.

Our full day programme starts with learning how to handle and cut glass safely as well as how to layer and arrange different grades of glass to produce a piece of fused glass. In the afternoon you will work on creating your own piece. You can choose to either create one large piece (20 x 20 cm), or 4 smaller (10 x 10cm) tiles.

Jan will walk us through creating a design using sheets of glass then she will help you put it all together. Finished work will need to be put into the kiln to melt. This firing process takes 24 hours, then you can pick up your work from our shop or have it shipped to you after the class (+ P&P). All tools and materials supplied.

This course is a great first step in learning how to create your own interesting glass plates, bowls and coasters. While what is made in the class will be flat, you will have the option at the end of the class to have your piece slumped into a ceramic dish to create a more 3D shape.

Class size is limited to six people so everyone receives individual attention.

More About Jan Simpson

Jan has been running her glass studio as Koru Arts Glass for the last 12 years. New Zealand born and raised in Asia, Jan takes her inspiration from memories of her travels and also from her surroundings. Now based in Sussex Coast, UK, Jan spends many hours walking on the local beaches and in the cottage garden behind her studio. Her new range of pieces draw on these local scenes a great deal.

Jan uses more then one technique to produce her work and often incorporates traditional stained glass painting, fused glass and leadlight into a single project. Her use of the torch to create inclusions in some of her recent work gives her the ability to add exquisite detail to her pieces.

Jan’s stained glass work can be found in private and public collections. Her most notable work being a series of windows produced for the St Frances of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Ascot, Surrey. From traditional stained glass to more contemporary fused glass, Jan produces a wide range of pieces from small items through to to one-off commissioned pieces.
