The perfect course for the beginner gardener! Join this 4-week evening course and delve into the basics of establishing and sustaining a successful home garden. You will be offered the chance to learn a wide variety of skills and engage in enriching practical exercises to assist you on your gardening journey. Course held in Ohariu Valley, Johnsonville.
Over the duration of this 4-week evening course, we will be delving into the basics of establishing and sustaining a successful home garden. You will be offered the chance to learn a wide variety of skills such as diagnosing plant health problems, propagation, identifying common weeds, pests and diseases and composting at home.
You will also be engaging in enriching practical exercises such as potting up, sowing annual seeds, transplanting and tool maintenance.
Our expert tutors will offer you advice on how to select the correct potting media, ensuring your soils are suitable for planting and how to prevent common deficiencies in your plants.

All classes are run at the Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust site, as such it is a unique place that has more to offer than first meets the eye. https://www.wbrt.org.nz/
This course will offer you full access to a practical learning environment while enjoying the serenity of our location in the Ohariu Valley, just outside of Johnsonville.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
- Grow and maintain your own vegetable garden.
- Understand the basics of potting media and composting at home.
- Select the right products for your garden maintenance including the right lants for the season.
- Have more confidence in your ability to grow plants.
- Recall basic plant care.
