The project to rescue and preserve the Daring, which is a two-masted schooner that was wrecked near the South Head of Kaipara Harbour in February 1865. In 2017 the wreck emerged from the shifting sands where it has lain buried for over 150 years.
As a maritime historian closely associated with the Daring project, Don Armitage will talk about what’s been discovered so far about the vessel and its recent move to Northland, the people connected with it and what they got up to. It’s a global story and one that he has found fascinating the more it unfolds. It just keeps on giving!
Don Armitage has worked as a diver, fisherman and fisheries officer and has saltwater instead of blood in his veins. He has written, researched and produced many books, including six of the popular True Tales series. He has an avid interest in shipwrecks and is a well-known authority on the subject.
