The Kaurihohore district on the northern outskirts of Whangarei, was founded in the 1850s and 1860s by Nova Scotian Scots as a sister settlement to Waipu and has a fascinating history of its own.
Jane Garrick will present outline of this history along with interesting stories and anecdotes, some in the words of the pioneers themselves.
Jane’s aim in giving this talk is to inform and inspire others about local and family history. She will share from her own experiences and how she and a team of keen locals came together to produce the very successful book, 'Memories of Kaurihohore and Vinegar Hill', a collection of stories of the early settlers, their descendants and residents of the area.
A descendant of Nova Scotian Scots who settled at Kaurihohore in 1860, Jane Garrick is a local English teacher. She has a passion for history and is keen to encourage others to record memories before they are lost. Her book 'The McBeths of Kauri' was published in 2009 and she was part of the team who produced Memories of Kaurihohore and Vinegar Hill in 2019.
