Join us for a very special sailing on board the tall ship R. Tucker Thompson. Members of the Arakite Trust and Dame Anne Salmond will share the fascinating histories of Īpipiri, Eastern Bay of Islands. This area is home to some of the first arrivals in Aotearoa New Zealand nearly 1000 years ago; then around 250 years ago it was the site of some of the first encounters between Māori and Europeans.
A series of archaeological excavations over the past 20 years at Mangahāwea Bay on Motuarua Islands have provided the evidence that Mangahāwea Bay is unusual. It has been continuously occupied and cultivated from the time of the earliest Polynesian settlers through to historic times. It is rare as it is one of only a small number of sites in New Zealand that show early settlement and adaptation by Polynesian explorers. It is also the only site which is in public ownership in the north that can be investigated.
Dame Anne Salmond, who has written a series of internationally recognised prize-winning books about Māori life, European voyaging and cross-cultural encounters in the Pacific will then continue the story. She will share how the the arrival of Europeans disrupted the world order that had been established in the Bay. First the English, with the arrival of the HM Bark Endeavour, followed by the French, resulting in the unfortunate experience of Marion Du Fresne. These events changed the course of history and started a chain of events that we are only starting to understand the consequences of more recently.
As we discover and explore our own history, these stories help us understand the impact of the wave of Tauiwi (foreigners) that arrived on these shores and the subsequent colonisation of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The sailing departs from Russell Wharf at 10.00 (ferry tickets from Paihia available) and returns shortly after 4.00 pm. The sailing includes morning tea of freshly baked scones and cream, island stopover and BBQ lunch on board the ship. Vegetarian options available.
