ISPS Handa Halberg Awards Decade Champion Announcement:
On Sunday 14th February the COVID-19 Alert Levels changed and Auckland moved to Level 3 with the rest of New Zealand going to Level 2 until at least 11.59 pm on Wednesday 17 February. Due to these restrictions, the Halberg Foundation is unable to hold the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards Decade Champion event on Thursday 18 February, live at Spark Arena.

The ISPS Handa Halberg Awards Decade Champion will celebrate outstanding New Zealand sporting achievements from the past decade. It is also the major fundraiser for Sir Murray Halberg’s charity the Halberg Foundation - which aims to enhance the lives of physically disabled young New Zealanders by enabling them to participate in sport and recreation.

We continue to work with our broadcast partner Sky Sport on reshaping the televised Awards ceremony which will now take place at a later date, so that we can announce and honour the decade champions.

While we are disappointed, we are unable to hold the live event, we support any decisions that protect the health and safety of all New Zealanders.

Our small team of dedicated and committed staff have worked tirelessly to create the live event and we appreciate your patience and support as we adapt to the changing environment.

We are also looking at alternate ways to fundraise for the Halberg Foundation’s important inclusive sport and recreation programmes. Halberg is committed to continuing to support physically disabled young Kiwis to experience all the benefits of being active.

Our Halberg whānau, including the Youth Council who were due to attend the event, are always our priority and we will be reaching out to provide assistance and support to them.

We are grateful for the wonderful group of Halberg supporters and we appreciate all the encouraging messages we have received since the restrictions were announced.

Now more than ever we are reminded of the resilience shown by the many young athletes we support. This is summed up by our whakatauki “He waka eke noa, mō Aotearoa whānui” We are all in this waka together, for all the people of New Zealand.

We will keep you updated but for now stay safe and take care.

Kia kaha, arohanui,
The Halberg Foundation
