Join our small group Day Out to explore an area full of history, ride a historic train into the Karangahake gorge, once a bustling community of gold miners, with remnants of the machinery once needed to extract this precious metal.

We travel north from Tauranga, through the mural town of Katikati and on to Waihi, a town still linked to the goldfields of the 1800s as it continues to produce gold with extensive mines around and under the town. First up is a ride on the Goldfields Railway - travelling from Waihi to Waikino, this historic train runs along a section of the old East Coast Main Trunk Line.

We will enjoy a Devonshire Tea at Waikino station before continuing by road through the picturesque Karangahake Gorge. Here we will take an easy short walk to view some of the historic stamper batteries and tunnels that make this such an interesting place to visit.

Heading back home we will stop to view the Martha Mine in Waihi, a huge open-cast gold mine still bearing gold to this day.

Inclusions: Goldfields Train Ride & Devonshire tea at Waikino Station
