'Public Bang for Public Buck: discussing the changing value of research in the real world'

In an economic environment where a tangible return on public investment isn’t just desirable but necessary, it can seem difficult to draw a direct line from research funding to positive commercial outcomes.

At this Kaupapa Kōrero, a panel of leading University of Waikato researchers will discuss how their research is changing the world for the better. The panel will talk about the commercial, social, environmental and policy impacts of publicly funded research, and answer your questions.

The Panellists:
Dr Carrie Barber: Dr Barber has recently featured in news media with her Positively Pregnant app, a free tool to support families through pregnancy. As a clinical psychologist, development of the app stemmed from her current research focus on perinatal mental health.

Associate Professor Adam Hartland: Dr Hartland is a Kudos Award-winning environmental geochemist who has taken an interdisciplinary approach to environmental sampling. His research has resulted in the development of an automated water sampler for cave environments, a tool gaining attention for its commercial, and research, applications.

Associate Professor Kura Paul-Burke: Dr Paul-Burke (Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Whakahemo) has applied mātauranga Māori principles to her mātai moana - marine research, mapping generations of knowledge passed down via local kaumātua to the restoration, management and development of shellfish beds in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Professor Iain White: Professor White is an environmental planner committed to engaging with researchers, practitioners and communities to span the science-policy-practice interface from theory through to outcomes. He is also active in science communication and engagement and favours an interdisciplinary approach to environmental planning.

The 'Kaupapa Kōrero - little talks, big topics' lectures are free and open to the public. Opus Bar will be open from 5:00pm for anyone who wishes to purchase refreshments prior to the lecture starting at 5:45pm. Free parking is available on campus via Gate 2b, Knighton Road, Hamilton.

As this is a ticketed event please register via the University of Waikato website link and bring your eticket with you on the night.
