Oceania MathsJam Gathering presents "Recreational Mathematics," a public talk by Michael Linton. Come along for a night of interesting mathematics from the field of number theory. All welcome.
Topics covered include:
- Alphametics: an ancient Chinese number-letter substitution puzzle dating back over 2000 years
- Magic Cube: a magic square on steroids!
- Factor One: a methodology for factoring numbers using binary
- Pseudo-primes: they look like a prime number, they act like a prime number, but they're not prime.
- Mersenne primes: pointing the way to perfect numbers
- Ulam spiral: look out primes, you're going the wrong way!
The talk will run from 7:30-8:30pm (with question time following) on the evening of Saturday 31st July in the 1066 Medieval Mosaic Building at 10 Wilson Street, Geraldine. This event is open to the public for gold coin at the door; you do not need to be registered for all of Oceania MathsJam Gathering to attend.
Oceania MathsJam Gathering (OMG for short) is an annual weekend get-together for like-minded maths enthusiasts around NZ and Aus. Attendees discuss interests, insights and ideas, and have opportunities to network with the wider mathematical community in a fun and relaxed environment. There'll be mathematical competitions, a bakeoff, lightning talks on all things mathematical and plenty of puzzles, maths problems, activities, games and recreations to play with. Attendees at OMG21 will also have an exclusive chance to learn about Michael Linton's amazing mosaic version of the Bayeux Tapestry.
