Shortly the Moutere Artisans will be polishing their signs and sweeping away the last signs of winter. Spring is around the corner, and Labour Weekend is the start of their summer season. On Sunday October 24th each of the artisans invite you to their village to experience really, really, nice stuff.

This annual event brings people from all over the province to taste the new olive oil, the new release wines, to experience some of the country’s finest cheeses and talk to talented artists – people who make baskets, sculpture, jewellery and ceramics. It is a superb day out.

The artisans work together to celebrate life in one of the most picturesque villages in the country.

Upper Moutere is home to New Zealand’s oldest pub (171 years) serving great food and craft beers.

Tanya Doty will be weaving baskets at the Old Post Office in Upper Moutere village. She promises to have some traditional woven poles for your vegetable garden. Stacey Whale – a trained jeweler creating exquisite pieces in gold and silver is working at her studio located in the Old Post Office, and is open Labour Weekend. Across the road Owen Bartlett and Katie Gold will be at work in their historic studio, and you have a chance to wander in their garden.

Onto Neudorf Road.

First, you will come across Neudorf Black – producers of black garlic puree and essence – unique, natural and packed with flavour.

Thorvald Cheese. Talk with the cheesemaker and taste some sheep and cow’s milk cheese.
Michael MacMillan is a gallery offering so much – bronze sculpture, French oak homeware, and photography. And coffee.

Onwards to Terra Nova Alpacas and a chance to meet charming alpacas and see the delicate work Debbie weaves from their fleece.

Further up the road is the Sausage Press Deli Co. – makers of delicacies like pork and fennel sausages, salami, and smoked duck, and divine smoked salmon.

At Neudorf Mushrooms you can find out about the secret life of fungi then travel to the spectacular Neudorf Olives for a wonderful view of their grove while tasting new olive oils.

So much glorious wine comes from the Moutere.
Sitting on top of the ridge at Flaxmore Vineyards you will have a memorable view across to the mountains while trying their wines. At Himmelsfeld, Beth will be pouring some aged wines and at Neudorf Vineyards you can experience library wines matched with local cheese.

It’s a really, really interesting day in the country and a perfect start to the warmer weather. Visit the Artisans from 10 am until 4 pm.
