ARCHITECT
Ministry of Works, 1965-81; Athfield Architects, 2007-10
Putting the public back into civic architecture, Athfield Architects have transformed a Brutalist fortress (the former NZ Post building) and worked with Ngāi Tahu to incorporate cultural narratives in an innovative adaptation. The welcoming, abundant space of the two-storeyed ground floor doubles as a thoroughfare between two major streets and as the connective heart of the building’s services. Outside, the structure’s bulk is celebrated as reassuring, while the north side glistens with the largest double-skin facade in the country. The sustainable innovation continues within – gas generated at landfill provides heating; rainwater is harvested to flush toilets – showing why it was the first New Zealand building to receive the 6 Green Star trifecta.

Publicly accessible restrooms, wheelchair/walking aid/pram accessible, service animals allowed, assistive listening devices, child friendly.

Join Open Christchurch on 15 & 16 May. With 46 open buildings, two guided central city walks and dozens of special activities (from children’s workshops to performance as well as expert talks and tours), Open Christchurch 2021 is a celebration of our architecture. Discover new spaces or get up close to buildings you love, for free.
