Without photosynthesis, we would not be here. The chemical formula for the process, linking water, carbon dioxide and sunlight, is arguably the most important in the world. Unlocking the secrets of what became known as ‘photosynthesis’ began with simple experiments in the mid-17th century, the formula was accurately defined in 1864, and the process was fully understood ‘to the nth degree’ by the late 20th/early 21st century. The stage was set for the development of commercial-scale artificial photosynthesis.
This talk will highlight the main aspects of photosynthetic discovery and the personalities who did the unlocking.
