Poetry at Your Place feat. Melanie McKerchar - Event #37

New Zealand's only regular online spoken word event!

For the first Poetry at Your Place, of our second year running, it seems only right to have our newly-crowned, first Poetry Slam at Your Place Champion featuring, so that is exactly what we’ve got! Alongside our ever-fabulous open mic - providing an extended set with poems from her brand new book, set your faces to LOVE-MODE for Melanie McKerchar.

For those that don’t know:

Melanie McKerchar spent the first 40 years of her life not just avoiding, but actively hating the colour pink because society had taught her it was girly and silly. Now she doesn’t care about what society thinks is lady-like or tough or whatever.

Melanie is both stunned and overjoyed to be the first Your Place Slam League Champion and promises to provide a light show with her prize once it arrives. She has just released her debut collection Nova – with Toes Dangling in Super and would like you to buy it.

She’s been published in various NZ literary journals and anthologies, and has performed at the Word Christchurch and Going West Writers festivals. She also produces poetry shows, runs workshops and performs regularly at open mics. She sleeps a lot of the time.

As always, this event at Your Place is pay-what-you-can-afford, because finances should not be a barrier to art. However If People do not honour that trust-system then this event becomes unsustainable and cannot continue so if you can afford it, please do – the money goes towards paying our artists and keeping this whole thing up and running.

And if you cannot afford anything, still come along and enjoy the poetry with my blessing (though do please help us out by sharing the event and getting some other folks along – that’d be amazing!) – we believe in human kindness at Your Place, so hopefully, someone who can afford it will pay a bit more and cover you.
