Shiver me timbers! Pirated Productions presents Polly, a journey through a reimagined 19th century South Pacific full of cowardly colonisers, criminals, and cultural clashes.

After a hundred days at sea, a lone woman arrives in search of her missing husband. Sentenced for dreadful crimes, his convict ship was attacked and his whereabouts are unknown. Our young heroine enters a land as three worlds collide: colonists and islanders strengthen resolve with a suspicious eye, while out in the deep waters, a faint sea shanty is heard…

Batten down the hatches as we set sail into this original adaptation of the infamous successor to John Gay's Beggar's Opera. Forbidden in its own time, Polly's epic text is brought to stage through ensemble devising and popular hit music. A satire of a satire, this version of the play reinvents Gay's themes of power, class, and race for a new context.

Suitable for Mature audiences. This production contains some explicit language.

Victoria University of Wellington's theatre company, Pirated Productions, brings the contemporary adaptation of John Gay’s Polly: An Opera to stage at Studio 77 on Fairlie Terrace. The season will run for five nights from 25 to 29 May at 7pm.
