TAKE THE TOUR
Recycling sorting centre education tours for Waipā schools

Is your school studying recycling and resource use this year? Have you ever wondered what happens to your recycling when the truck goes past your house? You are invited to come along and see!
Waipā District Council is offering education tours of the Recycling Sorting Centre for Waipā schools. Processing more than 15 tonnes of recycling per day, Waipā’s local recycling sorting centre is where it is all happening!

One free “ticket” includes one teacher/adult supervisor and four students.

Where is the tour?

The tour starts at the Community Room at the Te Awamutu Library on Selwyn Lane. We then take you on a free bus to the nearby Recycling Sorting Centre (a five-minute bus ride) where you’ll observe how the recycling is hand sorted, from the safety of a viewing room. You’ll then travel by bus back to the library at the end of the tour.

Who can come along?

These tours are designed for students Year 3 and up from Waipā schools. We suggest you bring along rangitahi who are interested in the environment. They can then record what they learn and see and share their knowledge with the wider school. As the space at the Recycling Sorting Centre is small, there is a maximum of 25 people (five groups of four students and one adult) allowed in the viewing room.

How long is the tour?
The total length of the education tour is 1.5 hours.

Who is hosting the tour?
The tours are hosted by Matua X-Man 'guardian of the environment' and the Waipā recycling team.

Can we bring a whole class?
No - we are offering the tour to small groups from various schools to start with in 2021, and in the future there might be a chance to bring a whole class.

What if we need to cancel our booking?
Please email sally.fraser@waipadc.govt.nz if you need to cancel your spot. This means we can offer your booking to another school.
