RAIL LAND is a celebration of public transport in Aotearoa. The show is a journey of the mind, through song and story, about New Zealand’s on-and-off love affair with its public transport system.
For the Papaioea Festival of the Arts, Rail Land guests will travel, with Anthonie Tonnon, by bus from Palmerston North's iSite to Foxton Memorial Hall for the RAIL LAND show, and then return to Papaioea. One of the central North Island's oldest towns, Foxton is synonymous with public transport. The town had a tram line to Sanson, it's own rail line to Papaioea until the 1960s, and its bus station was a crucial link in NZR Road Services transport to Papaioea and Whanganui. Even after severe cuts to public transport services in the late 1980s, Foxton had a second life as the home of Ian Foster Little's labour of love - the Foxton Trolleybus Museum.
As new residents move to Foxton from Papaioea and the Wellington region, demand is growing for a return to the public transport it once had - but often the wait for new services is long. Mostly song, but part comedy, part tragedy and part personal memoir, RAIL LAND is a show that honours the relevance of the past to the present, and the journey is a one night antidote to the wait for change.
