Featherston Booktown is delighted to bring two amazing events to Featherston on the Saturday of the long Labour weekend. It's been a while since we've had live literary events with fascinating writers and both of our writers will transport us to different, challenging and entertaining worlds - from the comfort of our chairs.

Strap yourselves in for a conversation with Rick Gekoski and Noelle McCarthy travelling through his life and times, the people he’s met, the dragons he’s slain, and the books he’s discovered, read and written.

Rick Gekoski, a firm favourite with book festival audiences and his legion of readers, will entertain in fine style, as he shares stories of his years working in the rare book trade. Local writer and broadcaster Noelle McCarthy will navigate our travel with Rick through his life and times.

Rick’s session is sure to capture anyone interested in books, literature and travel, or anyone who simply loves an entertaining tale well told. Featherston Booktown considers ourselves extremely lucky that Rick – who usually lives in the UK – happened to be in New Zealand with his Kiwi wife when COVID-19 struck,

Featherston booksellers For the Love of Books will have Rick's book 'Guarded by Dragons' and his latest book of fiction, 'Darke Matter' available for sale and signing at the event.

Following Rick's event, there will be a short intermission, during which The Featherston Poetry Competition’s award ceremony will be held, along with – of course – a poetry reading.

Next up it’s time to saddle up as John Hellemans elaborates on the details of his hilarious cycling adventures during the 2018 Tour Aotearoa in his book A Biker’s Tale. No matter the travails of the day as he rode the 3000 km from Cape Reinga to Bluff, each day he hammered away at his laptop. As well as allowing him to make sense of all that passed through his mind during his day of pedalling, that labour resulted in 'A Biker’s Tale' – a book the Kiwi cycling pioneers, the Kennett Brothers, have called “a must-read for casual and serious bikers alike.”

John will discuss the uphill grunts and the downhill freewheeling – and everything in between – with fellow elite sportsperson, Professor Roger Robinson, a runner, writer and spoken word performer, in an event sponsored by Green Jersey Explorer Tours.

Any cyclists in the Wairarapa for the Cycling Series NZ race the day after John’s nicely timed event (Sunday October 24) are very welcome.

A special thank you to our patrons, Liz Stringer and Robbie Morrison, whose generosity enabled us to hold these events.

All of Saturday’s events will be held in Featherston’s Anzac Hall (62 Bell Street), which is large enough to enable social distancing in accordance with Level 2 restrictions. All attendees must wear a mask and scan their COVID app or sign in for contact tracing.
