Seascape - Eco Print Workshop - Moana Abundance 2021

As a maker and an architect, I’m inspired by traditional methods and old ingredients, but I am very much about making something for a modern man, looking to the future and preserving knowledge.
Te Reo sums it in the word - Kaitiakitanga. Everything we do in life has to be done sustainably, casting thought for the future.

What we will make: a woollen scarf/wall hanging, ribbons and twine.

What we will learn: how to extract organic colours from fallen leaves and enjoy the permanent impressions on natural fibre.

Materials: everything provided, approx 1.2X35 cm fabric.

My work is inspired by personal experiences from my childhood; mushroom and berry picking in the forest, the smells of flowers from my grandmother’s front garden, and also folk stories and traditions about herb harvesting.

In my walks I pick the leaves and try the new prints with them, mixing in berries and garden clippings the whole process is very meditative and completely magical because I never know exactly what will come from the dye bath. It is like unwrapping a gift every time I open the dye pot.
I intended to show you how easy it is to transmute common plants into natural fabric dyes of rare beauty. The formula has been an open secret since the days of Pliny the Elder: fill a pot with water, add a basket of leaves and a square of silk, bring the potion to a simmer. Then wait for the magic to happen.
Colours can come from common flowers (like dahlias and marigolds); tree leaves (Japanese maple, sweet gum); berries (blackberry, elderberry); herbs (mint, rosemary); nuts and shells (acorn, black walnut hulls); and barks (birch, madrone).
If you are looking at a plant, you are looking at a potential dye and a chemical-free process makes it safe.

We will discuss traditional ways of making dyes, gather your dye elements on a walk and create a wearable piece of art.

I believe that our future depends much on our kids' knowledge, so if you want to bring a kid alone - it's free! One child per paying adult. Kids will observe, spend special time with you and make a paper print.
