A Wellington Jazz Festival first - from dawn to dusk, a solar-inspired day of jazz.
In a special all-day event dedicated to lovers of both jazz and classical music, New Zealand composer and double bassist Umar Zakaria presents an extended suite of compositions for combined jazz and string trio. Across four performances, Sun Song Suites explores the human construction of time through our relationship with the sun, and how different times of day bring out different capacities of the human spirit.
Winner of the 2018 Tui for Best Jazz Artist, Umar presents this innovative experience alongside Ruby Solly (Cello, Taonga pūoro), Tristan Carter (Violin), Duncan Haynes (Piano), and Luther Hunt (Drums).
The suite will begin with ‘Dawn Songs,’ and explore the moods of morning sunrise with a special pre-workday performance.
‘Daylight Songs’ will pick up at the lunch rush, delving into the potentials of work and play under the light of day.
Contemplating the compulsion to reveal our true nature at the threshold of dreams and reality, ‘Twilight Songs’ will follow at 6 pm.
Then finally, ‘Night Songs’, explores the impulse to rebel against permanence at the close of each day.
Take your pick or attend the full suite of these immersive performances from one of Aotearoa’s most acclaimed young musicians.
