On Sunday 15th August we are bringing you a screening of Michael Curtiz’s utterly gripping noir thriller ‘Mildred Pierce’, starring Joan Crawford.
When Mildred Pierce's (Joan Crawford) wealthy husband leaves her for another woman, Mildred decides to raise her two daughters on her own. Despite Mildred's financial successes in the restaurant business, her oldest daughter, Veda (Ann Blyth), resents her mother for degrading their social status. In the midst of a police investigation after the death of her second husband (Zachary Scott), Mildred must evaluate her own freedom and her complicated relationship with her daughter. Packed with shocking swerves and surprises, Mildred Pierce is a tight genre film that manages to account for the rocky, unnavigable terrain of real life.
The film screening will consist of a 30-minute intermission where a delicious Devonshire Tea* awaits (a cup of tea and traditional homemade scone with cream and jam).
