The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. The evolving nature of this ancient festival is evident in its varying origin stories, customs and names.
Here at Lan Yuan, Dunedin Chinese Garden we celebrate this event in June as The Legend of Qu Yuan, as it’s an opportunity to commemorate the life and legacy of the poet and scholar, Qu Yuan.
Join us for a fun family day and discover the stories behind the Dragon Boat Festival. Eat zongzi – traditional Chinese sticky rice dumplings, find the hidden ox and celebrate the legend of the poet and scholar, Qu Yuan through interactive activities.
Learn to make the dessert, tangyuan in a cooking class, sit back and relax with a cup of tea in the Tea House, with stories, games and calligraphy all day – there’s fun for the whole family!
