A Public Lecture on The Problem of Improperly Obtained Evidence in New Zealand Criminal Courts.

Associate Professor Scott Optican of the Faculty of Law will discuss one of the more important and ongoing issues in New Zealand criminal justice: what do we do with evidence obtained illegally or unfairly by the police? Should judges allow it to be used in criminal trials or not?

Using real life examples from current cases (involving both traditional and undercover policing), Associate Professor Optican will discuss current New Zealand law, the principles involved and the pros/ cons of different approaches to the treatment of improperly obtained evidence.

Audience participation and questions will be invited and encouraged.

Please note you must register on our website in order to attend.

Venue: Stone Lecture Theatre (801-316)
