TOBY and the REST' 2nd Anniversary Concert. Live music from this award winning quartet.
Toby and the Rest quartet are based in West Auckland and comprise of the Barrett brothers, Max on drums and Toby on Saxophone with Tyler Diprose on bass and Lucas Kewell on piano. They formed just over two years ago and have collected awards at all the National competitions. This year they have been voted as the most outstanding jazz combo at two National competitions, one in Tauranga at Easter and more recently at the Wellington Jazz Project contest where Lucas received awards for the most outstanding pianist plus most outstanding original composition, with Tyler voted the most outstanding bass player and the quartet getting most outstanding combo award. They have been performing at various venues in Auckland and each time audiences come away inspired and amazed at the quality of musicianship. They play a range of jazz classics from the 1950’s always adding their own flair to the pieces, at the recent Wellington contest they combined the classic Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’ with Ray Henderson’s 1924 composition ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’. They also play their own compositions and seem to have ‘found’ a new sound in the ‘jazz’ category.
Some people, after hearing them perform, have commented that they “…never really liked jazz before but this is so different”
'Toby and the Rest' recently released their first album ‘NEXT’ and will be playing tracks from this together with several new original pieces.
They will be playing numbers from their recent album 'NEXT' and many new compositions, they will be joined by guest musicians to make this a night to remember.
“The communication between these young musicians and their connection with the audience make them stand out, filled with fun and skill, this was live music at its best and as people left (a recent gig) I heard someone say ‘that was a $100 ticket concert” Review.2020
