The UC Teece Museum is proud to present "Visual Storytelling: a response to Homer" by artist Marian Maguire.
Marian will talk about how Homer entered and influenced her artwork, both through text and Attic vase painting. Using ancient sources plus her own images, she will discuss how the stories changed once her imagination was ignited.
Christchurch artist Marian Maguire is best known for lithographs, etchings and paintings which re-contextualise ancient Greek vase painting. In ‘The Odyssey of Captain Cook’, ‘The Labours of Herakles’ and ‘Titokowaru’s Dilemma’ she looked at New Zealand colonial history, slanting the viewpoint and questioning her country’s acceptance of the past and its impact on Māori/migrant relationships. ‘Feats, Pursuits and Endless Toil’ brought classical mythology to earthquake addled Christchurch, ‘Goddesses’ questioned support of the status quo and her ‘Odysseus’ and ‘Penelope’ fireplaces tell Homer’s Odyssey with equal weight given to the male and female sides of the story. Marian’s work has been exhibited widely throughout New Zealand and in the UK, Europe and Australia and was recently included in ‘Troy: Myth and Reality’ at the British Museum.
