“Blurring the line between sound art and the sonics of Wellington’s Waterfront”

Waterfront Monophony is a free and accessible sound art event which will be presented on two occasions: Saturday 4th December 2021 and Sunday 23rd January 2022, between 2pm and 4pm. Find us on The Great Harbour Way / Te Aranui o Pōneke, near Solace in the Wind (The Naked Man) Statue.

Waterfront Monophony will help to break down the barriers of access to sound art, moving the medium from academic and art institutions to Wellington’s waterfront. As the public walk along the waterfront, they will hear the sounds of five New Zealand composers’ works blend with the surrounding sounds of the wind and sea.

The works will be split between twelve wireless speakers, each held by a performer who will be pacing a length of the waterfront. This work also explores new research within sound art aiming to increase the accessibility of spatial audio.

Featuring works from Jesse Austin-Stewart, Mia Kelly, Hakopa Kuka-Larsen (DARTZ, Bad Hagrid), Flo Wilson, and Rose Windeler (Hybrid Rose, VALENTINA).

Supported by The Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
