Wendy Pettersen - What If?
Opening Event: Saturday 20th March 4 – 6 pm
In ‘Pathway of the birds’, Andrew Crowe explains how Pacific navigators would orientate themselves against pods of wales and flocks of seabirds. They could guess their proximity to land by the species that they encountered on the way. Up to 370 kilometers from land they would find petrels, shearwater, prions, and penguins, while closer to land were terns, gulls, and gannets. Then on the shores: godwits; spoonbills; oystercatchers; wrybills; plovers and stilts, to name a few.
We treasure the small flocks that remain. This exhibition is a tribute to the vision of those people who work to preserve the sea and shore birds, and the environment that sustains them. It is also intended to present their vision to people who are not aware of the possibility of living with flocks of seabirds and harbours filled with dolphin, orca, whales, and seals. The delight of this type of experience was evident in lockdown when people noticed the bird song, and crowds turned out to watch the cavorting dolphin swimming down the bays to the mouth of the harbour.
Wendy Pettersen, born in Zimbabwe, completed a BAFA and Master of Art in Art History at the University of Natal. A Devonport resident, Pettersen taught art at Epsom Girls Grammar and Westlake Girls High, where she first attended an Auckland council workshop on sustainability for schools and subsequently co-ran the Envirogroup with Sue Wood. She has previously exhibited at Depot Artspace, where her solo photography exhibition Going Home explored the phenomenon of birds using human landmarks to navigate.
