Waihōpai/Invercargill-born, Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington-based self-taught artist Maisie Chilton actively processes and heals psychological and physical tensions through her art practice. Where does it hurt? explores her personal intersection of trauma, disability and radical vulnerability.

Chilton’s simple, evocative and compelling mark-making exposes her own psyche and experiences of living with cerebral palsy and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) caused by sexual assault.

Coming to art-making and poetry as an urgent way to address, accept and heal these aspects of her lived experience, Chilton’s stark line drawings, powerful written words and visceral, layered paintings affirm the artist’s presence, voice and process, while bringing visibility to survivors of abuse and those living with disabilities, and allowing emotional space for others to reflect.
