Sue Elliott, Wellington Sculpture Trust Chair for the past 10 years and a trustee for 13 years before that, will take us on a journey of discovery around our city, talk of lessons learned, and detail exciting future projects, with no less than three works to be installed later this year.
The Wellington Sculpture Trust has provided an extraordinary legacy over the past 40 years, delivering to Wellington 29 permanent sculptures and nine temporary installations. This body of work began with Tanya Ashken’s beautiful work, Albatross, commissioned for Wellington’s waterfront. Before long, however, the focus of the Trust turned to the Botanic Gardens and a sculpture walk was created with the placement of four sculptures in the early 1990s. The Trust cut its teeth in the Gardens before going on to create sculpture walks in the CBD, along Cobham Drive with the Meridian Wind Sculptures, and continuing with further works on the waterfront.
The contribution of these public works of art is enduring and enriches the visual, aesthetic and creative atmosphere of our city, making art accessible to everyone.
The first of its kind, the Trust has become an exemplar both nationally and internationally in the development of best practice for commissioning public works of art.
