Clarinet Quintets by Mozart, Brahms and Piazolla

Rachel Vernon studied in London with Antony Pay and freelanced with orchestras including Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Scottish Opera Orchestra.
She was Sub-Principal clarinet with the NZSO from 1989 - 1991, and since 1995 has been Principal Bass Clarinet.

The Aroha String Quartet, Haihong Liu & Anne Loeser (violins), Zhongxian Jin (viola) and Robert Ibell (cello), is firmly established as one of New Zealand's finest chamber music ensembles. Founded in 2004, this versatile Wellington-based quartet is known for its passionate musicality, impressive technique, and multicultural innovation. They arecommitted to presenting string quartet works from western classical and avant-garde repertoire to traditional Chinese folk music, as well as works for larger forces through collaborations with numerous high-profile musicians.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart- Quintet in A major for Clarinet and String Quartet K 581
Mozart’s love of the clarinet was fundamental in establishing the clarinet as a member of the orchestra’s woodwind section. Moreover, it elevated the clarinet’s role as a solo and chamber music instrument and inspired contemporary and future composers like Schubert and Brahms to compose their masterpieces.

Johannes Brahms - Quintet in B minor for Clarinet and String Quartet Op 115
In 1890 Brahms, then aged 57, announced his retirement from composition. On a visit to Meiningen that year, however, he heard an amazing clarinetist, Richard Mühlfeld and was inspired by this artist to return to composing. We owe the Clarinet Trio, the Clarinet Quintet, and the two Clarinet Sonatas to Mühlfeld

Astor Piazzolla - Oblivion (arranged for Clarinet and String Quartet)
composed for the Marco Bellocchio film ‘Enrico IV’ before making its way onto the concert platform and Piazzolla’s music, composed originally for the quintessential Tango instrument, the bandoneón, has transcended its movie and survives in independent and robust health. It’s rather difficult to find bandoneón players outside of Argentina, so it has been arranged for every conceivable solo instrument accompanied by string quartet.

The Aroha Quartet performs regularly around NZ in centres from the Deep South to the Far North. In 2014 they performed five concerts as part of Chamber Music New Zealand's Kaleidoscope series. Overseas trips have seen them participate in the prestigious International Summer Academy in Austria in 2010, give concerts and masterclasses in China in 2010 and 2013, and perform at the Huntington Music Festival in Australia in 2011.
