How can camp aesthetics be playful, positive, and restorative?
Camp is ambitious. Using mixed media, these three artists explore camp aesthetics. At times they linger on nostalgia, at others there’s a tongue in cheek defiance.
Camp here is a playful subversion. It’s a resistance.
Clement Greenberg described kitsch as a “reservoir of accumulated experience” - and camp is a rich reservoir in direct opposition to the canon of high art.
Queer is a category, but it’s also a refusal of categorization.
It exists as non-normative: fantastic, different, strange, and subverts traditional ideas of gender and sexuality. Queer, argues Amelia Jones, is “that which indicates the impossibility of a subject or meaning staying still, in one determinable place.”
This exhibition runs from 28 October - 26 November 2022.
Thursday - Saturday 10-4
