Fake news and Fearsome truths - what you'll find in newspapers about your family with Margaret Gaffney (MG Historical Research)
Sponsored by Ancestry as part of Family History Month

Newspapers provide a rich source of stories about our ancestors and the communities they lived in. But how much of it was true? And do we want it to be?

Finding a mention of your ancestor in a newspaper article can be a wonderful discovery. But can we trust what we read in print? How fake was the news? And do we want to uncover unpleasant details about our relatives? This talk focuses on where and how to find the stories about your family and their community, and how to sift the fact from the fiction, using what you find as a jumping off point into other records.

Maggie is also speaking at the 2022 Auckland Family History Expo, 12-14 August

About the speaker:
Maggie Gaffney lives in Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington and has traced her tūpuna (ancestors) back to Ireland, England and Scotland. She is a tutor with the Institute of Heraldic & Genealogical Studies (IHGS) and holds their Diploma in Genealogy as well as an Advanced Diploma in Local History from the University of Oxford.
